Iceland presents a striking array of natural contrasts. Expansive black sands dominate much of the highlands and much of the southern coastline. Rising from these plains, white glaciers create a dramatic visual against the blue sky. Numerous geothermal areas across the country display a wide spectrum of colors. While greenery is present, Iceland lacks substantial forested regions. The climate further accentuates these contrasts, with frequent occurrences of cold, overcast skies and pervasive grey fog.
