Pálmi Bjarnason uses the photograph to convey his perception of Icelandic nature. He looks for ways to capture the moment when light and shadow bring out the country's uniqueness and spirit. Iceland's nature is varied and magnificent and at the same time dangerous if you are not careful. The ever-changing weather adds to the diversity.
Pálmi has travelled around the country for the past 50 years in all seasons and is constantly meeting new aspects of nature; from totally calm summer evenings with the midnight Sun about to touch the northern horizon to gale winter blizzards in the highlands.
Pálmi uses black/white photographs in his interpretation of the country's harsh nature and bad weather. This medium best interprets the country's extremes; weather variations, the contrasts of the landscape and the moods of the land.
Pálmi was born and raised on a farm. Nature, therefore, became an essential part his being. Nature he has always loved dearly, as can be seen in his works.
Pálmi has published six photo books in collaboration with his friends and wife; most recently "Thingvellir - in and out of sight". He has also participated in six group exhibitions and held one solo exhibition.
Pálmi Bjarnason notar ljósmyndina til að koma skynjun sinni á íslenskri náttúru á framfæri. Hann leitar leiða að fanga augnablikið þegar ljós og skuggar draga fram sérkenni og anda landsins. Náttúra Íslands er margbreytileg og stórfengleg og á sama tíma hættuleg ef ekki er varlega farið. Síbreytileg veður bæta við fjölbreytileikann.
Pálmi hefur ferðast um landið síðastliðin 50 ár á öllum árstímum og kynnst breytileika náttúrunnar; allt frá lognkyrrum sumarkvöldum í sótsvartan byl að vetri til upp á hálendinu.
Pálmi notar svart/hvítar ljósmyndir í túlkun sinni á harðri náttúru og slæmum veðrum landsins. Þessi miðill túlkar best öfgar landsins; veðra brygði, mótsagnir landslagins og anda landsins.
Pálmi er fæddur og uppalinn í sveit og ólst upp sem hluti af náttúru landsins. Hann hefur alla tíð verið mikill náttúruunnandi, eins og sést á verkum hans.
Pálmi hefur gefið út sex ljósmyndabækur í samstarfi við félaga sína og eiginkonu; síðast „Þingvellir – í og úr sjónmáli“. Einnig hefur hann tekið þátt í sex samsýningum og haldið eina einkasýningu.
